PDP with Les

For Starters I have brain fuzz so hope I can get these intense learning notes down without becoming overly confused and reflective.

We started the lecture by completing small activities. One was to cut paper and fit them into different shapes, another was to make an interesting picture from a few straight lines on a piece of paper as a group. These activities where given to us with minimal instructions and we had to interpret them in groups to the best of our abilities. There was no right or wrong way of going about the activities it is just about looking outside the box and making decisions.

our groups example

The lecture was about connecting our day to day life and experience into our working practise. Its about "me the dot" in the context of my life and what to do with the information we gather. Inspiration can come from all sorts of visual materials. One discussion was around the artist Richard Serra. He wrote lists of verb's that conveyed what he did with his hands, he wrote basic ones like fold /bend/cut, then he wrote more elaborate ones like rotate/ measure/ distill/ hinge. He would use these lists if he needed other ideas and would mostly use the basic ones, but could always step out of his comfort zone into the less intuitive if needed . This was my list which in my opinion sounds like i'm hanging out the washing.

Basic

Feel, bend, scrunch, smell, hang, put up to the light, fold, wet, stretch, compare, sew, knit, tear,

Elaborate

Measure, rotate, perfect, drape, balance, micro.

We then went on to create a individual infographic map, showing the effect of daily influences on our practice. This is my list of the top activities.

  • Family

  • Work

  • Health

  • Reading

  • Exercise

  • Watch TV

  • Gardening

  • Culture

It was a good exercise and made you think about where your influences came from and how your life could shape your creativity. When we discussed it, it was interesting to me how big or small our circles were and if the circles over lapped and there size depending on our age and personal commitments. The idea that these circles could change in size or even drop of in the future meant that we are continuously evolving.

So how does this all help me?

This kind of thinking opens up more ideas, its about the journey to me, having a starting point. How influences can react and interweave with your initial ideas. Its about being open to information, be it in magazines, on the news, children's home work or watching a documentary. Think about growing the knowledge moving forward and being inspired.

What is it all for ?

How do you want to live your life?

What do you want from this work?

Whats your work about?

Who's your audience?

Where does the work go?

Is the work being seen?

No Pressure then x.
