In 1905 Salon d’Automne in Paris exhibited work by Henry Matisse, Charles Camoin and Andre Derain. People who went to see the exhibition where amazed and perplexed by the style of painting with critics openly saying that the style was eccentric and outrageous. Matisse was particularly put down for his works and was referred to as the groups leader as he was showing signs of a better distribution of colour and at some point was nicknamed the professor. He used large luminous strokes of colour with a black outline to contour and frame the shape.
The Fauvet period did not mark the arrival of their careers but was a journey towards new experiences along side the spread of the expressionism trend.
