This visit can’t be recommended enough and at £12 a person it’s one of the best value tickets I have ever bought.
Mary Quant started her career making hats but soon moved to designing clothing for the youth culture and was one of the first designers dedicating her talent solely to this new revolution. In the past the young just wore clothes in the same design as there parents but with the emergence of pop music kids wanted to dress differently and express themselves often being risky and controversial.
I talked to my mum about Quants clothing and although mum new about her designs they were still to expensive for most young people Including my mum and her friends. Looking at the clothes I was surprised how good quality they were and how well made as well. The designs were very quirky and could easily be worn today. A lot of the clothes were made from English wool of plain design which surprised me but that could have been because the cotton ones may have not survived. She used a lot of jersey knit as well which is easier to move around in they were also complimented with large zips and buttons.
We know Quant for the inventor of the mini skirt she raised the length of the skirt which carried her career through to the 1970’s. It seems strange to think she is not on the high street to day but controversy over her departure from the brand when bought by a Japanese investor could be the reason why.
