Wow what a lecture! this lecture left me confused, disturbed, and uneasy with the topic being investigated.
Johnathon Faiers is a Professor of Fashion thinking, and is a co director of the Winchester Luxury Research group. He is a lecture at the University of Southampton and author of two books, Dressing Dangerously about dysfunctional fashion in film, and the acclaimed work Tartan, where he interrogated the myth of clan-ship and established tartan.
This talk was looking at the history of the mans suit with the introduction of the waste coat in London 1666 by King Charles II. After this history introduction Johnathon compared the tailoring to Ed Gein who was a serial killer who made house hold items and clothing from human skin that he had exhumed from graves and from two woman that he had murdered. This was shocking and to be honest I couldn't see the connection. The lecture went on to take about how the suit has been worn by gangsters as a trademark and associated with spending a lot of money on the best personalised suit you could buy.
Johnathon then talked about necropants, these are made from the lower body of a man. The skin trousers are from people who practiced witchcraft in Iceland and when worn would give you financial reward.
I am still mystified about this take on the suit but can only guess that making clothing out of human skin is the ultimate no no fabric to choose.
