Today me and my husband visited the Helsinki Design Centre. We were able to park close by which was great for a large city. It cost €12 each and it was ok for the money. The museum is on three floors, 2 showing displays from artists and 1 showing great Finnish design. I was mostly interested in the Finnish designs. There was a neckless worn by Carrie Fisher in The New Hope Star Wars film, that was designed by Björn Weckström he was born in 1935 and designed many well received pieces that were inspired by the landscape. The founder of Marimekko Armi Ratia also had a display case and although not a massive brand it is well known and respected. Armi was a visionary who kept her eye on international fashions and had based her designs on being original, earthy, honest and idealistic.@helsinkidesigncentre. The designer Annika Rimala was a influential textile designer who worked for Marimekko she was a dress designer who liked large patterns and easy to wear garments. She liked clothing to be comfortable and to be easy to move about in, and designed lots of her dresses with a rounded hem. Annika also had a display case and you Could easily see she would fit into the ethos of Marimekko.
Also included was the classic 1970s plastic chair and some wooden seats with a smooth classic line still fashionable today. Here were drawings of the Nokia original mobile phone and an informative display about the very popular crossey road computer game. All designed by the Finnish.
Expect to be at the museum for one and a half hours.
