Happy Scraps

This article from The World of Interiors, gave me a big smile on my face and reminded me of buying a pouch from an indigenous tribe in china during 2001. This article however is about berbers in Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains and there ability to make beautiful rugs out of waste.

Twenty years ago Souad Larusi made hand made rugs called zindekhs popular. she went to source these zindekhs after seeing them in books belonging to her husband a dutch architect, and wasn't disappointed. Unlike most rugs that are made from new wool and fibres these zindekhs are made entirely out of bits and pieces no one wants like old jumpers worn out clothing and twine and transforms them into something useful and desirable. A family and friends collaborative enterprise, the zindekhs are not made on a loom they are made by using plastic, grain flour sacking and a special hook that lifts the fabrics through to the top. They use dyes to dye the fabrics and there designs often reflect their mood and aspirations, and use motifs from the local environment.

I looked at Larusi .com and saw the rugs on sale without a price which seemed a little strange, so I guess they are out of my price range. But lets hope this money is passed down the chain to the women as they are rugs that your'll never forget.
