Free Hand Embroidery

Updated: Oct 28, 2018

This week we had a workshop tutorial on embroidery with David at NUA. We practiced free hand embroidery on the 1008 Bernina Sewing machines. Lucky for me I have one of these machines at home so am vey comfortable with using it.

Instructions

Always us a embroidery hoop. This will give a good tension to the fabric when sewing.

Alway check the tension of the thread and use the correct foot for embroidery.

We learnt different techniques to acquire different stitches.

General stitching:

Turn bottom dial left to lower the dog feed so you can move the hoop freely.

Turn the stitch length to 5 for a large stitch. The stitch will come out in different sizes depending on the amount of movement you are giving to the hoop.

Lower the needle into the fabric and turn the side handle twice to connect with the cloth before machining.

Begin stitching.

To provide different stitches:

The tension dial can alter the top thread to make it loose or tight. If you loosen it by decreasing the number (less is more) you will get more top thread if you tighten it turn to a large number it will tighten the thread.

If you want the bobbin thread to come through the fabric to the top, then loose the bobbin by turning the screw on the bobbin case ant clockwise.

You can also create a flock on top of the fabric by using a zig zag stitch in rows. Once you have done this apply some interfacing to the back of the fabric then cut the threads on top.

Another technique is to add crochet cotton or weaving wool to the bobbin and use the heaver thread to fill in or for decoration. However make sure you turn your fabric to the correct side as bobbin thread will be underneath.
