Finnish Rag rugs

My lovely friend Maija booked me in for a afternoon weaving lesson making a rag rug. Initially I thought it would be rug making by pulling up rags through a mesh as that’s what we call them in England. I was therefore delighted to find out that I would be using a loom and cutting my own rags.

We used a 4 shaft loom but only used 2 of them for plain weave (over and under). This was the first time I had used foot peddles instead of hand leavers which was so much better too.

These rug rug are very traditional and you see them everywhere. They are a lot like traditional Japanese rugs where they make them with old kimonos.

Brilliant afternoon and and didn’t want to leave.
