Automatism

For mine and Laura’s presentation we have chosen to discuss Automatism. This term in art refers to a technique that is produced by carrying out art work using the subconscious.

Automatic drawing and painting was seen as a a way to escape cultural intellectual and historical constraints supposed to be lodged deep within an artists personality.

Surrealist artists used this method to suppress conscious control over the making process allowing the mind and body to take control. This was executed in an number of ways Jean Hans Alp experimented with dropping paper and fixing it where they laid. Others like Breton wrote rapidly as possible without intervening consciously to control the hand. Other examples including collage introduced by Max Ernest was a form of visual art he also introduce rubbing and scraping to create chance textures with-in his work.
